SoulSteel was released in October 2025 and is a joint project between Mojang and Noxcrew. During the MCC x Minecraft 15th Anniversary Party, one of the games, Sands of Time (SOT), saw huge success, and Mojang wanted to draw upon SOT's inspiration to create a persistent Bedrock server.
In SoulSteel, you play as a new adventurer in a strange land full of mysterious dungeons and the remnants of an old kingdom. By completing quests and gaining experience, players will unlock new Dungeons, and explore their hidden depths to discover ancient Weapons and Armour. As the players’ abilities grow, greater challenges reveal themselves.
During the initial few months of scoping, a lot of time was spent figuring out how to turn the inspiration from Sands of Time into an engaging game with much more longevity than the 2-week Anniversary Party game. Not only this, but the tutorialization and monitization strategy had to be considered from the ground up, ensuring it was baked into every decision.
One of the issues faced early on was the vanilla Minecraft combat system. It didn’t feel right for the game, so to achieve the envisaged progression, a bespoke Weapons system had to be crafted from scratch alongside Abilities, which were key for players to rise through the levels; these both had to be considered and tied to the in-game progression system.
Creating amazing experiences is what Noxcrew delivers every day, and it's something the team is very passionate about. Once the game was in a great place, another challenge to consider was the infrastructure. The server technology faced various hurdles in relation to the scale of the deployment needs. To bypass some of these issues, Noxcrew built a custom tool that enables the deployment of the entire experience without having to interface with Mojang manually each time, resulting in much faster, smoother update rollouts.
SoulSteel launched with incredibly strong community interest and received significant exposure from various content creators who speculated about the teasers and, upon launch, played the game!
